Stump Grinding
TREE STUMPS - WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Following the removal of trees, shrubs or hedges, the remaining stumps may present an issue for the future use of the space and potentially a hazard for trips and falls. Whilst most conifer stumps will die off and slowly decompose, most broad-leaved species will vigorously regenerate from the stump. Either way, Swift Tree Services can offer a range of solutions, depending on your specific circumstances and your surveyor will discuss the ideal solution with you.
Stumpgrinding
This is the mechanical removal of stumps, using purpose-built machinery. Swift Tree Services operate 2 stump grinding machines, giving us the flexibility to efficiently remove both small and large stumps depending on the access available. The smaller machine requires just 650mm clearance, making even tight-access back garden stumps accessible.
Stumpgrinders work by moving a heavy, toothed flywheel across the surface of the stump, chipping it away into small fragments which quickly breakdown. The wheel can reach depths of up to 40cm, normally sufficient to remove all of the central root ball, meaning the remaining lateral roots will die off and decompose naturally. Once the stump has been ground out, replanting can be undertaken - we can supply and plant your replacement tree as required. Alternatively, in the case of hedge removals, we can leave the ground ready for your fencing contractor to install replacement fencing if this is your preferred option. We have excellent contacts with fencing contractors and our office can organise for this work to follow directly on from our visit, meaning the whole project can be ‘swiftly’ completed to seamlessly maintain your boundary.
Stump Treatment
Where stumpgrinding isn’t required, we can treat broadleaved stumps to inhibit any regrowth. Swift Tree Services utilise the Ecoplug system, which involves drilling into the stump and inserting plugs containing the treatment. This ensures that there is no risk of cross-contamination to other nearby plants & trees; and that the treatment is safely sealed within the stump, making it 100% pet & child safe. Conifer stumps will generally not require treatment and our surveyors will never recommend the use of herbicides where it is not necessary.
You may even choose to retain a stump as a feature and for the value that the decaying timber brings to the ecosystem as a habitat for fungi & invertebrates.
