The Fedrigoni Group are amongst the world-leaders in producing self-adhesive papers, vinyls and film wrapping materials. They operate in 132 countries worldwide and employ 6000 staff. We were contacted by the site manager for their UK distribution centre in Manchester to undertake tree removal work to facilitate improvements to be made to their car parking facilities and main goods-in entrance.
In common with many commercial premises, there were a number of trees on site, planted when the facility was first developed, but that had seen little maintenance in the years since. Consequently, the trees closest to the building were now bringing limited benefits, whilst causing issues with leaves blocking gutters; debris falling close to access points; and excessive shading of office windows. For this reason, the decision had been made to remove these trees and Swift Tree Services contacted to provide an estimate for the work involved.
Whilst on site, our surveyor was asked to advise on a group of cypress trees, originally planted as a hedge close to the main entrance, which had reached a significant height and were causing visibility issues for HGV drivers entering & exiting site. We advised against reducing the trees in height, due to the way in which the trees would then react by growing wider – requiring further, regular maintenance, with the associated costs. Instead, the more radical approach of removing the trees was chosen, in order to maximise visibility around the main vehicular entrance.
Due to the time of year of the enquiry, bird-nesting was a consideration for the proposed work and a visual inspection of the alder trees close to the building was carried out by our surveyor. The cypress trees were too dense for a visual inspection, so quote was provided for an ecology survey to be undertaken on these trees, prior to the work being undertaken.
Our chosen method for the proposed work was to utilise the grapplesaw crane to mechanically dismantle the trees from the ground and to utilise the digger & grab to efficiently feed the brash through the chipper. This approach would dramatically reduce the duration of the works, whilst fulfilling our obligations to minimise the risk of working from height. It also meant that avoiding the obstacles beneath the trees was straightforward and any risk of damage was minimised. A full risk assessment and method statement was provided to our client in advance of the work, together with sketch plans of the areas of car park that we proposed to cordon off as exclusion zones. It was agreed that based on our method statement, the works would not interfere with the operations of the facility and could be carried out within the working week.
The job was a full success from our perspective, with the planned method working exactly as intended. The mechanised approach was extremely efficient at dismantling and processing the trees, whilst the capacity of our 7.5t chip truck & 3.5t tipping trailer were vital in being able to remove the quantity of chip produced from site. This was all sent to be recycled as biomass fuel. The site was left clean and tidy, with the low shrubbery now a much easier prospect for ongoing maintenance.
